From the Economist article: "Its biggest legal export is of natural gas to Thailand. ... The Thai sales earned an estimated $2.7 billion last year, 45% of total exports."
Remember mentions of a "pipeline" during the Anthro Club meeting? That would be the Yadana pipeline, a joint project involving Total S.A. (a French energy group), the Unocal Corporation (who have a 29% piece of the action), PTT (a Thai state-owned oil and gas company), and Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (a state-owned enterprise of Myanmar).
The Yadana was built specifically to move natural gas from fields off the Myanmar coast to the Thai border. Unluckily for the indigenous Karen peoples of southern Myanmar, the last forty miles of it had to be built through their territory. I haven't seen anything about "death camps" either, but a lot of what could loosely be described as "human rights violations" appear to have occurred in that last forty miles. The nicest were probably forced relocation and forced labor.
Interestingly, some Myanmar nationals (I'm guessing Karens) who had been on the crummy end of these violations sued Unocal in U.S. Federal court. I won't bore you (further) with the legal wranglings that went on, but Unocal ended up settling with them out of court.
Sources available upon request for all the above mentioned stuff; I didn't want to make an already overly long and dull Comment longer and duller by adding a bunch of citations.

It never occurred to me that someone dressed the monkey in the advertisement; I always assumed he picked out the outfit himself. Your notion that the monkeys were shipped already dressed to appeal to a particular magazine’s fanbase is pretty funny*. You’ve got the detective crowd covered; I suppose the comic book guys got a Squirrel monkey in a Batman or Thor outfit. The weirdest possibilities lie in the tabloids. In the early sixties, I’d guess the Enquirer split its front page ink between Jacqueline Kennedy and Brigitte Bardot. If you bought a monkey from them, you took the chance of it showing up in either a pillbox hat or a bikini.

* possibly less so to the monkeys involved…

Wow, so many questions! Is the 'toy' that cute little shirt he's wearing, or is that an add-on option depending on which book you order from- I can just imagine a little-detective-to-be ordering his monkey and expecting it to come with a little fedora, a flip out notebook, and a crumpled pack of Lucky Strikes.
And what happened to all the 'amusing companions" once the government did finally begin regulating this stuff?

Those poor little guys.

But, at least maybe they had a smoke for the ride.

so here is something that i think sounds awesome - it would be cool to either host a screening or to attend (as a super-jammin' cool-as-heck-anthro-club) one that is already put together.
let me know what you guys think.
also, it totally won't make my heart sad if you guys aren't that into it, so be honest - it's just an idea!

i dug the lecture! what i resonated most with me was her emphasis on the need to be hopeful for the future. i think that she is correct about some youth today not having a positive outlook and attitude about things to come. while there are numerous (and reasonable!) reasons why as a group we may tend towards pessimism, i like that she reminded (me at least) not to let that feeling stymie positive actions that could counter and thus redirect the future. it is always good to be reminded that we aren't ineffectual or powerless. thanks again for finding and sharing it.
